Sustainable Packaging – A better and advanced way to protect the environment.

To reduce the environmental impact and ecological footprint, the development of sustainable packaging has emerged as one of the most important factors by now. The improved sustainability of packaging involves the use of life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle assessment (LCA). Sustainable packaging requires more analysis and documentation to look at the package design, materials, processing, and life-cycle.

Reduction of carbon footprint – Need and action:-

With the worrying increase in global warming, the need for the reduction of carbon footprint has become a very important step for the companies. Those companies resulting in higher carbon emissions now moved to the “green movement”. Companies started adopting the procedure of more recycling and re-usage of more package components as a part of their eco-friendly actions. They also encourage their suppliers, contractors, and distributors to do the same. Sustainable packaging has got a mention in the new considerations for the environment.

Switch-over to biodegradable material: –

Many firms worked on how best they can avoid the packaging material made of synthetic polymers and now switched over to dairy-based films composed of proteins such as casein and whey (ingredients of milk). These films will be biodegradable and better oxygen barriers than synthetic, chemical-based films.

Sustainable mailers: –

The most common mailer used worldwide, envelopes, can contain flat objects like documents, certificates, etc. different types of envelopes exist today as of date. However, the original envelope was never made of paper but it was hollow, clay spheres molded around the coin, and was used in financial transactions. Jacques de Morgan and Roland de Mecquenem, in 1901, first discovered envelopes.

Sustainable mailers belong to the new group of sustainable packaging. The replacement of plastic poly mailer bags with compostable mailer bags becomes a great step in the modern age when every possible effort takes place to reduce plastic waste. The compostable mailers give an advantage of easy composting at home or commercially. Made from a composition of corn-based polymers these mailers compost in 6 months and certified for both home and commercial compost.

The mailers are made from a combination of PBAT, a bio-based compostable polymer, and PLA, the plant materials such as regular field corn and wheat straw. The use of PLA as low as 0.05% of the annual global corn crop, makes it a very low-impact source. The bags, thus made, meet the American, European, International, and Australian standards – including certifications for your domestic home compost. The requirement for certification states that the product must break down within 180 days in domestic compost conditions and within 90 days of commercial compost. This way the sustainable packaging helps to reduce the environmental effects.
